ASEAN doesn't need to get bigger. It needs to get connected.
ASEAN is set to become the world's 4th largest economy by 2030. That's a big number.
But here's the question that matters more: why do we still trade so little with each other? Less than 25% of ASEAN's trade happens within the region - less than half of what Europe or North America trade among themselves.
I've spent almost 30 years watching this region up close, first inside a global company, now as an advisor. And I keep seeing the same gap: we're proud of the size of the economy, but we haven't built the plumbing that lets it actually work as one market.
Different rules in different countries. Systems that don't talk to each other. A digital economy expected to double to $560 billion by 2030 - running on infrastructure that's still being pieced together country by country.
Here's what often gets missed in the "4th largest economy" headline: small and medium businesses make up 97% of all companies in this region and 85% of its jobs. They ARE the ASEAN economy. And most of them still can't easily use digital tools, get financing, or navigate the paperwork to sell to their neighbors as easily as they sell to a country halfway around the world.
